The change of an era for preventative fish health work
Understanding the mechanisms for disease development is still one of the biggest and most difficult fields of research within both human and veterinary medicine.
Preventing disease is by far the most cost effective and long-term investment compared to treatment of symptoms when disease is already established.
Prevention means understanding what factors and mechanisms affect the organism negatively, and at the same time gain knowledge to understand what it takes to support basic vital functions in the same organism in order to handle the environment where it exists.
For Atlantic Salmon in an intense production environment we know that environmental and production related factors must be optimized for best biological function. Improved technical solutions for better production systems are important.
The question remains however; how do we support basic biological functions in the salmon itself?
Stembiont™ Microbial Enhancement
35 years of research has resulted in development of Stembiont™ Microbial Enhancement. The product consists of natural strains of benign bacteria isolated from the salmon and its marine environment itself, proven to be essential for many physiological mechanisms in the fish.
Industrial production and high focus on disinfection and reduction of pathogenic agents reduces the amount and availability of these essential bacterial strains, that are picked up by the fish if available.
Assuring that uptake, Stembiont™ is delivered as a concentrated microbial solution insuring the presence, uptake and benefits of these bacteria. The application can be made in the hatchery phase, either by dip (ex. in anesthetic bath during vaccination) or by bath.
The bacteria are readily taken up, becoming a part of the fish microbiome supporting basic biological functions.
For long our focus has been on the products effect on improved growth and reduction in bacterial ulceration and accumulated mortality.
Trials with salmon lice during 2019 has shown significant reduction in infestation of lice in microbial enhanced fish, up to 5,5 months after treatment and in the field for up to 11 months.
This makes the product not only a support for increased robustness, but also a non-medicinal measure (IMM) and biological solution for lice without the usual risks for animal safety and the environment that other lice solutions bring.
This novel research represents a medical breakthrough in understanding disease prevention.
Awareness that vital microorganisms in the production of salmon today are lacking, contributing to a negative cascade of effects in disease development, leads us to understand how we can prevent this development by securing presence of those same important microorganisms.
The knowledge implemented will represent great long-term value for the salmon farming industry, as well as for farming of other aquatic species.

We are proud to be in the forefront of this disruptive and novel research, developing a technology platform for biological tools to prevent disease.
